Christ Chapel Dulwich, London SE21, is one of two parish churches to be found in leafy St Barnabas Parish and is located in the heart of Dulwich village. Christ Chapel stands next to the world famous art Dulwich Picture Gallery and the church is connected to the art gallery on the east side.
Christ Chapel forms part of three sides of a quadrangle of buildings that border a lawn bisected by a stone path that runs from the God’s Gift emblemed gates to the steps of the chapel. The cloistered pathway running across the west side provide a nice backdrop to group wedding photographs.
Inside the church, a copy of Raphael’s Transfiguration hangs on the north wall, thought to have been painted by one of Raphael’s assistants. The dark wooden rood screen and the beautiful stain glass windows are highlights of the church’s interior architectural features. Of particular note are the fierce sculptures perched at the ends of the pews reminiscent of Hieronymous Bosch’s chimeras.
