During the drive from the Big Smoke to Brownsover Hall Hotel, Rugby, I was accompanied by Helena. As we drove north, we chatted: cameras and lenses, Adobe ACR, the moolah Spanish wedding photographers earn. By the time we reached the M6, the early morning mist had dissipated and day looked to be unseasonably summery and bright.

One of the first things I remember asking Helena was what camera and lenses she was going to use at the shoot as it seemed she was not carrying much. She showed me two old film cameras, a Canon AE and a Praktica, both with prime lenses attached. Her intention to keep her photography straightforward and uncomplicated helped inspire my own approach to the day’s shooting.

One byproduct of carrying and using less gear, meant  appreciating more the available light in the surroundings as the day progressed. My goal in shooting a cohesive set of images was definitely aided by the sunny weather and that the grounds of Brownsover Hall had a variety of photogenic arboreal locales.

Also attending the Brownsover Hall shoot were wedding photographers from the Leeds bridal shoot, Paula and Konrad. It was good to catching up with them, albeit briefly, given during the day, photographers scattered ( with models ) to pursue their own photographic ideas.

Hard to believe while writing this post with dank mist lingering this November morning that several days ago when I attended the Custard Factory Shoot in Birmingham that is was warm enough to walk around in a T-shirt. With the clear blue sky it could have been a summer day’s despite the remaining autumnal colours on the few trees in the area.

Part of the attraction in doing a bridal shoot in a former industrial area is that it runs against the expectations of wedding portraiture set in landscaped ornamental gardens of a country estate house located in picturesque countryside. Coupled with the obvious difference in textures and colours available in the post-industrial environment, the opportunities to produce markedly different images is an exciting prospect for any wedding photographer.

The following are the first of a two part series of a set of images from the Custard Factory Bridal Shoot, November 2011. The images are retouched in a darker tonal palette than my usual style.

Back in July I participated in a bridal shoot organised by Rachel Wilks of Photography by Rachel Wilks and afforded me the opportunity to be an Evesham wedding photographer for the day :).

The shoot involved other wedding photographers and models in the countryside outside of Evesham. The majority of the photography took place primarily in locales around the glorious rolling lavender fields of Snowshill, Broadway, Worcestershire.
